EHCPs
An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) describes your child or young person’s special educational needs, as well as any related health and social care needs that impact their education.
It sets out the support and provision required to help them overcome barriers to learning and identifies the outcomes they are working towards, including preparation for adult life, independence and future aspirations.
Why is the Annual Review Important?
The EHCP is reviewed annually or for children under 5 at least every six months. The EHCP is a key document that supports your child’s education and development. The annual review provides an opportunity for parents, school staff and professionals to work together to ensure the plan continues to reflect your child’s current needs, progress and future goals.
Who Attends?
Parents and carers, our Inclusion Coordinator (INCo) and relevant external professionals involved with your child, where applicable.
Meetings are usually held face to face at school. Where appropriate, alternative arrangements such as a virtual or telephone meeting may be available.
Before the Review Meeting
- Please confirm your attendance by returning the reply slip or accepting the online invitation.
- Complete the Parent/Carer Contribution Form (Section A) and return it to the school INCo.
- Your child’s class teacher will update the EHCP pre-meeting draft, including your child’s pupil views. Read through the pre-meeting draft EHCP, which will be emailed approximately two weeks before the review.
- Prepare any comments, questions or updates you would like to discuss.
What Happens During the Meeting?
The review focuses on the progress your child has made towards the outcomes identified within their EHCP and to ensure it continues to meet your child’s needs. Each section of the EHCP is reviewed and parents and carers are invited to share their views and experiences. The child’s current strengths, needs and progress are discussed and recommendations for updates or amendments are recorded.
If You Cannot Attend
Please contact the school office as soon as possible if you are unable to attend the scheduled meeting. We will aim to arrange an alternative date, time or format, where possible. Due to the number of annual reviews taking place each year, meetings may not be rescheduled if the school is not informed in advance.
After the Review
You will receive a post-meeting draft EHCP containing the updates made during the annual review. The school will work closely with you to ensure any recommended changes are reflected accurately. The reviewed EHCP documentation will be shared with the Local Authority in line with annual review procedures.
Following this, the Local Authority will send you a draft copy with an amendment notice that clearly states the proposed changes and any supporting evidence, with time given for any comments or requested further amendments. A final EHCP will then be issued by the Local Authority.
